On Sunday December 27th at 2:10pm Holyoke Firefighters were toned out for a report of a structure fire at 190 Chestnut Street. The structure was an abandoned, vacant 3 story wood frame residential structure built in the 1900's. Upon arrival crews reported smoke pushing from the eaves. Entry was made on the first floor only to find a clear enviroment and no internal stairs leading to the second floor. Crews exited the first floor and made their way around the structure to the Bravo side exterior staircase. Heavy fire was then observed from the Bravo side second floor windows. Crews spent about 90 minutes battling the blaze from the outside of the house before they determined it was safe to enter the building. Upon entry to the second floor, crews encountered heavy fire in the walls of the bathroom and another room which also had a hole in the floor. Mutual aid was requested and received from the Chicopee Fire Department, South Hadley Fire District 1, and the Westover Fire Department. No injuries were reported. The fire is suspicious and under investigation by the Holyoke Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit and the State Fire Marshals Office.
